Abstract
Background and Objective: Establishing the Zangezur corridor will present significant geoeconomic, geopolitical, and geocommunicational challenges and crises for Iran. This research aims to identify the primary geopolitical challenges that the Zangezur corridor poses to Iran while examining the historical trends of Iran's Policy in the South Caucasus region.
Methodology: In this qualitative research, a descriptive-analytical approach was employed while consulting a wide range of scientific resources and expert panels. Additionally, ArcGIS software was utilized for mapping, and Smart Art tools were used for diagramming.
Findings: The key challenges associated with the Zangezur Corridor include the rise of ethnic tensions within Iran, the creation of geographical continuity among the Turkic-speaking member states, and the increased influence of Turkey in the expansive maritime region of the Caspian energy trade. Additionally, these developments may diminish Iran's bargaining power vis-à-vis Turkey and Azerbaijan in the geopolitical landscapes of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, while potentially excluding Iran from crucial oil and gas energy corridors extending south and north of the Aras.
Conclusion: The Zangezur Corridor presents a significant geopolitical challenge that could escalate into a geopolitical crisis for Iran in various dimensions, including ethnic, geocommunication, hydro-political, and geo-economic aspects. The study concludes with recommendations for addressing these challenges.
