Introduction
With the emergence of generative artificial intelligence and AI-based technologies, and their increasing use, the Journal of Defense Future studies has developed this policy statement to provide clarity and guidance for authors, reviewers, editors, and readers. This policy will be continuously reviewed and updated to align with technological advancements and best practices.
- A) For Authors
- Use of Generative AI in Scientific Writing: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-based technologies in the writing process is permitted solely for improving readability and linguistic quality. Authors must ensure that they are responsible for the accuracy and validity of the content. Therefore, AI use must be conducted under human supervision and oversight, and authors are required to thoroughly review and edit AI-generated outputs, as they may contain incorrect, incomplete, or biased information.
- Disclosure of AI Use: Authors must clearly declare the use of AI and related technologies in their submitted manuscripts.
- No Attribution of Authorship to AI: AI and its technologies cannot be credited as authors or co-authors. Authorship involves responsibilities and duties that can only be performed by humans.
- Images and Artworks: The use of AI to create or alter images in submitted articles is not permitted. The only exception is when AI use is part of the research design or methodology, in which case it must be fully explained in the methods section. The use of AI in generating artworks (such as graphical abstracts) is not allowed unless prior permission is obtained from the journal editor and full compliance with intellectual property rights is ensured.
- B) For Reviewers
- Confidentiality: Reviewers must treat submitted articles as confidential documents and refrain from uploading them or any part of them into their AI tools. This action could violate confidentiality and intellectual property rights of authors.
- No Use of AI in Review Process: The review process requires critical thinking and authentic evaluation, which is beyond the capabilities of AI technologies. Therefore, reviewers should not use AI to assist in the scientific evaluation of articles.
- C) For Editors
- Confidentiality: Editors are also obligated to treat submitted articles and all related communications as confidential documents.
- No Use of AI in Evaluation Process: Editors should not use AI to assist in evaluating or making decisions about articles, as this process requires critical thinking and authentic human evaluation.
- D) AI-Based Technologies Used by the Journal
The Journal of Defense Future studies currently uses the “Samim Noor” plagiarism detection system to screen articles. The journal continuously seeks to evaluate and implement new technologies that can improve the publication process while respecting confidentiality and data privacy principles to assist authors, reviewers, and editors.
